MONDAY IS EMACIPATION DAY IN ST MAARTEN, A NATIONAL HOLIDAY

Finally in St Maarten, the emancipation of Slaves is being acknowledge, our new national holiday. July 4th is Emancipation day. Considering most native St Maarteners are of slave descent, it should be a day to reflect on how far we've come as a people. It's also time that the Dutch acknowledge their wrongs, and issue a formal apology, or else there will always be lingering resentment. The Dutch were not the biggest slave traders. Holland is relatively small, and their involvement in the slave trade was brief compared to the Portuguese, the French and the Spanish. However it is time to acknowledge the misdeeds of the past, and to move on.

ST MAARTEN SWEARS IN NEW GOVERNMENT........AGAIN!

Prime Minister Sarah Wescot Williams, swore in her third government in three years yesterday. I had the opportunity to attend, but chose sleep instead. The new Minister of Justice is Dennis Richardson, our former governor. Cornelius De Weever remains Minister of Health, although for weeks there were speculations that Leroy De Weever had thrown Connie under the bus during negotiations for the new coalition. New Finance Minister is Hassink, New Education Minister is Patricia Lourens, something I disagree with, because I believe Ministers should be St Maarten or Antillian born. Also Sylveria Jacobs was a great Minister of Education, and they DID try to keep her, but she wouldn't play Sarah's games. VROMI minister, would be Theo Heyliger's house butler, Maurice Lake. Still no Minister of Tourism, but don't worry folks, Theo Heyliger will find some crook, who owes him a favor, to fill the position.
